This is the third part of a three part series that covers the author's transition from early manhood to middle age and finally into old age. It begins on a trip to the jungles of Mexico on an impromptu and ill fated mountain climbing expedition.
The story continues with the author taking stock of his life and and training to work in the medical field. He returns periodically to his first love and profession painting.
He falls in love with a woman dancing on a stage dressed as a raisin, marries and struggles to raise his family in a dangerous inner city neighborhood. He paints a vivid and sometimes heartbreaking picture of inner city life. He is eventually able to move his family from the city to the country where he works for a county Sheriffs Office as a Corrections Officer.
He loses his job for being a 'whistle blower', attends police academy, and graduates at the age of fifty four. He decides to run for Sheriff of his county which precipitates losing his new job at a law enforcement agency in a neighboring county.
He describes the struggles of being unemployed in a recession and of receiving an art scholarship at a university the age of sixty. He returns once again to his painting while in school in an effort to help support his family and relates the difficulties and of being too old to hire and too young too retire.
The book is liberally illustrated with photos and paintings to add veracity to his story.The author attempts to tell his story with both humor and sensitivity and yet in an unvarnished way. This story does not have the typical cookie cutter ending that most people expect. It is none the less a story filled with hope when all reason to hope seems gone.
