Hello. My name is Peter White and this is the amazing story of how I became Australia's first combined heart and kidney transplant recipient at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, in October 1990. You know, when I was young I was as fit as a fiddle. I could run a ten mile cross country with ease. Rugby, tennis, squash and surfing filled my days. In the school holidays I worked at Harbord Post Office, delivering the Christmas mail on foot. I also did regular treks into the wilderness in the Southern Highlands and the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Little did I know that within a few short years I would be a chronic invalid, barely able to cross the street and hooked to a dialysis machine three times a week.
Many adventures awaited me in those early years before illness overtook me. There were my studies at university and art school. Trips to Africa and Europe as well as extensive travels in Australia accounted for a large slice of this time. But the clock was ticking. A premature birth had led to small under developed kidneys which weakened my general health and eventually damaged my heart.
In spite the many difficulties I was able to develop my paintings, many of which appear in this book. Our family was very artistic. My grandfather, Herbert Gallop, was a well-known painter and teacher in the thirties and James McNeal Whistler had been a distant relative. At the time of publishing this book I have sold over 5000 paintings.
“The Road to Chateaumelion”, is a snapshot of events which led up to my historic heart and kidney transplant in 1990. That is over twenty five years ago. It has certainly been an adventure and I hope this book is an inspiration to others who struggle with illness and adversity.
I have had such a wonderful and rewarding life. My second wife, Kim has been with me throughout and I have watched my two beautiful daughters grow up, something I would never have thought possible. So join me on my little adventure and enjoy my paintings on the way. I assure you it will be a rewarding experience and thank you.
