Magic in the Mountains is the story of Kelsey Murphy, the extraordinary woman who revolutionized the creation of cameo glass. Her willingness to marry fine art to manufacturing gave her the incomparable advantage of using fourteen tanks of colorful glass as her palette. The cased blanks produced at Pilgrim Glass Corporation have never been equaled anywhere else in the world. But this is more than simply Kelsey's story. It is the story of her family and her teachers. The story of the talent and skill of those people she pulled into her wake, including fellow artist and machinist Robert Bomkamp and Pilgrim Glass Corporation CEO Alfred E. Knobler. It is the story of all the forces that gathered in Ceredo, West Virginia, the small town and its people who believed in the magic of cameo glass and possessed the resources and willpower to make it happen.
The book contains interviews with glass blowers, glass carvers, gallery owners, glass collectors, Kelsey’s protégées, and Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp’s friends and family members. Donna Meredith reveals the conflicts and sacrifices made to bring the ancient art form of cameo glass back to life in the twentieth century. In addition to Pilgrim Glass Corporation, Kelsey and Bob’s collaborations with Fenton Glass, Ron Hinkle Glass, and Glassworks are detailed.
Initially, 95 percent of all the glass cased a Pilgrim broke when they tried to carve it. Murphy’s determination to succeed coupled with the skill of glassworkers allowed the company to persevere and learn to reduce the breakage. Their achievements landed Murphy and Pilgrim in the history books. Pilgrim’s skilled artisans successfully cased and carved 12 layers of glass—seven more than anyone else had done.
They also created what was likely the tallest cameo vase ever made. “The Run for the Roses” vase stood 6 foot 2 inches tall. It was designed by Murphy, blown by Doug Chapman, masked by Mabel “Bonnie” Crockett, and carved by Dwayne Wallace.
Photographs documenting Kelsey’s life and the development of cameo glass are included throughout the book.
The book has been juried into "The Best of West Virginia" showcase at Tamarack.
The book is a must-read for those interested in the history of glassmaking or those interested in the examining the development of the artist. Kelsey Murphy was in the right place with the right skill set, vision, and background to make the magic of cameo glass happen in modern times.
