Great Artists takes its readers on a journey through the history of Western Art - from the end of the thirteenth century when Giotto broke with the conventions of the medieval art, and initiated many of the central concerns of the Italian Renaissance, to the transcended genius of Turner, who transformed the art of his age and set the stage for the modern era of painting.

Along the way, the book presents the life and work of such diverse artists as Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Vermeer and El Greco, among others.

The book wrestles with the much-derided idea of 'greatness' in art and does so by recourse to showing just how significant these artists were in changing the way in which the world was represented and seen - both by their contemporaries and posterity.Written to accompany the acclaimed television series of the same name, Tim Marlow's Great Artists: from Giotto to Turner is a refreshingly clear and informative account of 13 of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. The book begins with the "new realism and emotional intensity" of Giotto (1267-1337) and concludes with JMW Turner (1775-1851), "the last great academic artist" and forerunner of Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.

Basing his approach on the bible of Renaissance art history, Vasari's Lives of the Artists, Marlow argues that "looking afresh at celebrated artists has a strong contemporary resonance". In tackling the thorny question of what makes any artist "great", Marlow expertly guides the reader through the creative careers of Leonardo, Dürer, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Breughel, El Greco, Rubens, Vélazquez, Rembrandt and Vermeer. The book's choices may spark controversy--no Caravaggio, no serious 18th or 20th-century artists--but that is surely the point of making such a bold selection. Great Artists uses inserts and lavish colour illustrations to closely examine particular paintings and historical developments, but Marlow is at his best when interpreting "the smaller sweeps of a painter's brush". In his examination of Giotto's use of dry plaster, Van Eyck's oil glazes, Turner's cultivation of "a long thumbnail that he used to scratch at the surface of the paintings", or the fleeting moment "between melancholy and wry amusement" that defines the greatness of the Mona Lisa, Marlow tackles the nitty-gritty of great artistic creativity. Great Artists is an excellent, concise introduction to the "greats" of Western art that will delight and inform general readers and enthusiasts. --Jerry BrottonGreat Artists takes its readers on a journey through the history of Western Art - from the end of the thirteenth century when Giotto broke with the conventions of the medieval art, and initiated many of the central concerns of the Italian Renaissance, to the transcended genius of Turner, who transformed the art of his age and set the stage for the modern era of painting.
